Scientists have discovered an original way to prevent infection with coronavirus
A new wave of the pandemic of the already repeatedly modified coronavirus is approaching Germany, and the whole world. Therefore, the appearance within the walls of the University of Bremen of a fresh study on the impact of coffee consumption on the possibility of contracting COVID-19 immediately attracted the attention of doctors and journalists.
As noted in the program of the First Channel of the German television ARD, there are different points of view regarding the necessary measures to combat COVID-19 in the world: from Chinese zero tolerance for coronavirus to Swedish total tolerance. In the latter case, it is believed that if everyone gets sick, then there will be no problems in the future, since citizens will acquire immunity.
The German Federal Ministry of Health has developed appropriate proposals, but they are still being discussed. The only thing that all those responsible for health care in Germany have agreed to is the mandatory wearing of masks on long-distance trains and on airplanes, as well as in clinics and hospitals. But this time, the Germans, apparently, will not go to the closure of schools, shops and enterprises. Although land governments have been given the right to resort to more severe measures in the event of an aggravation of the situation.
Not surprisingly, the emergence of a new study on the impact of coffee consumption on the possibility of contracting coronavirus immediately attracted attention in the country. True, while this is an experimental stage of the study, which is carried out by scientists at the private Bremen University Jacobs Uni Bremen. The findings suggest that certain compounds in the coffee drink may prevent the virus from entering the body’s cells. In other words, a cup of coffee in the morning prevents coronavirus infection. From the point of view of scientists, all this looks “plausible and even probable.”
Studies have shown that a substance in the coffee bean, like quinic acid, prevents the structures characteristic of the coronavirus in the form of appendages to invade human cells. It is enough to drink a morning cup of filtered coffee with a volume of 200 ml, as 100 mg of quinic acid contained in it perform a miracle, preventing infection with coronavirus.
These studies have been published in the Royal Society of Chemistry. What confused the journalists was the fact that the Jacobs concern, which produces coffee, is just participating in the financing of this private university in Bremen. Therefore, ARD reporters turned to the German virologist Friedemann Weber with a request to comment on the results of the studies.
Weber believes that it is premature to draw final conclusions about the ability of a cup of coffee in the morning to prevent coronavirus infection. These are still laboratory and purely biochemical studies. There were no studies with real viruses and on living organisms, such as experimental animals. The study is only in its early stages, says Weber. After all, we don’t even know how the chemical substances of coffee get to various parts of the human body, and especially to those places where the virus is introduced into it. And how long the effect of quinic acid, which prevents the virus from infiltrating, lasts, is also not yet clear.
According to Weber, more sociological and epidemiological studies are also needed among coffee drinkers and non-drinkers to establish the frequency of infection with coronavirus for one and the other. Although the virologist admitted that coffee has the ability to protect the body from infections and even diseases associated with metabolism. In particular, it has been proven that regular coffee drinkers are less likely to get type 2 diabetes.
